The ? button and the welcome tour
Every screen has a ? at the top right. Press it and a short walkthrough of that screen opens, one step at a time, pointing at the buttons and fields it talks about. Next and Back move along, and Escape or the Close help button leaves it.
- The welcome tour: it opens when you sign in, and says where things are and how to make a post, a Space or a friend. Tick Don't show this when I sign in on it to stop it. It is a setting on your account, so it follows you to your other devices.
- Want it back? In Settings, tick Show the welcome tour when I sign in, or press Take the tour now.
The Rail
The Rail is where members talk to each other: what your friends and the players you follow are saying, and what you say. Only signed-in members can see it.
- Post: press Create post, write up to 10,000 characters (the buttons above the box add bold, italics, headings, lists and links; Preview shows how it will look), add a photo or a link if you like, then Post.
- Reply: use Comment on a post. Comments are short on purpose.
- See more of someone: open their player page and press Follow. To find people, use Find > Players.
- Something wrong? The … menu on a post has Report post. On your own posts it has Delete post.
- Need some space from someone? The same menu lets you block them. You'll stop seeing each other's posts, and you can undo it any time from Manage friends on your profile.
The Board
The Board is what's on at the rooms: events, specials, giveaways and promotions posted by pool rooms, cue-makers and coaches. Only members can see it.
- Narrow it down: pick Events, Specials, Giveaways or Promotions, or Spaces I follow. Clear filters puts everything back. The Board remembers your filters for next time.
- By date: Calendar shows the next stretch of dated posts day by day.
- Too much from one room? The … menu on a post has Hide this Space. You can bring it back from Manage Spaces on your profile.
- Posting yourself: if you run a Space, the Board has a composer for it. Repeating nights (every Tuesday, say) can be cancelled for one night and restored later from the post.
Tournaments
A tournament is a bracket a pool room runs: players enter, a director reports each game, and the results stay. Find them under Find > Tournaments. Only members can see a bracket; a room's public page shows only how many have entered.
- Enter: open one that is Open for entries and press Enter this tournament. Your name, as it shows on BarTable, is in the bracket for members to see. Withdraw takes you out until the bracket starts.
- Your next game: the tournament page shows it on top, with your opponent and the table, and the app tells you when you're up. The page refreshes on its own every 20 seconds or so.
- Your finish: when the director finishes the tournament, your place goes on your player page marked Checked. It is the director's record of the bracket, not something you typed. Share it from your profile with Share to The Rail.
- Run one: if you own a live pool room's Space, press Run a tournament on the Tournaments page. You can name up to three directors by page address; each signs in as themselves and can run that tournament and nothing else about your room. Entry fees and prizes are only text you write: BarTable never collects or tracks money.
- Before it starts: in Manage, press Open for entries and, if you like, Announce on The Board. Use Add a walk-in for players without the app, tick who is here, then Seed at random or pick seeds by hand and press Start the bracket.
- On the night: Run the night shows a card for each table. Tap the winner, then the other player's games: a result in two taps. Undo takes it back, Forfeit records a walk-over, and Find a player finds an old result to change. Changing one that later games depend on shows exactly what it would undo, and asks first.
- Finish: when every game is played, press Finish tournament to publish the places. Reopen to fix a result brings it back if you find a mistake.
- Names: a walk-in's name is typed by a director. Twelve months after the tournament ends it is replaced with "Guest", and the bracket stays.
Spaces
A Space is a page for a pool room, a cue maker, a coach or a shop. Find one under Find > Find a Space. It opens on your own city, so you can see what's close to home first.
- Visit one: a Space's page shows what its owner put there. A Space that is live can be opened by anyone with its link, signed in or not.
- Ask it something: press Message on the page. The reply comes to your Inbox.
- Keep up with it: press Follow. Its posts show on your Board under Spaces I follow.
- Make one: press Create a Space on the Find a Space or Board page. It stays a draft until you publish it.
- Be found on the web: a live Space is in the public directory on this site, and search engines can find it, unless you turn off List this Space in the public directory in its settings. Members can still find it in the app, and anyone you send the link to can open it.
Match-ups
Match-ups let you say when you're open to a game outside league, and find players who are. Open it from Find > Match-ups.
- Your listing: Match Preference says who can see it and message you: Friends only, Friends of friends or Anyone who is signed in. Not open right now hides it from everyone.
- What you'd play: choose your Game Preference, Play Style (friendly or competitive) and Format (by the game, race to a number, or ahead by a number). Work out the details in a message.
- Finding a game: use Find a match-up to search by name, city or venue and narrow it by the same choices. Leave the date blank unless you want a specific one.
Friends
Friends can message each other and see each other's posts on the Rail. Add one with Add friend on a player's page, or find people under Find > Players.
- Keep it tidy: Manage friends on your profile is where you answer requests, remove a friend or unblock someone.
- Waiting on you: a number on the Inbox icon means someone asked to be your friend. The request is at the top of your Inbox and on your profile, with Accept and Decline. Seeing it clears the number; the request stays until you answer it. If you haven't seen a request after a few minutes we also email you who asked, at most once an hour; turn that off in Settings.
- Bring your people: Invite a friend on your profile sends them a friendly email from you. You can see exactly what they'll get before you send it.
The Inbox
Your conversations with friends and with Spaces. The inbox icon next to your name opens it, and shows a number when something is unread.
- Start one: press Create message. Pick a friend, or find a Space and press Message on its page.
- Friends: add someone with Add friend on their player page. You can message each other once you are friends.
- Narrow the list: show Friends or Spaces, and Unread or Read.
Who sees what
The Rail and the Board are for signed-in members, and so is a tournament's bracket. A message is between you and the person you wrote to. A live Space is a page anyone with its link can open, and it is in the public directory unless its owner turns that off. Your Match Preference (above) controls who can see your match-up listing. You can delete your account from Settings.
The exact rules, including what we keep and who handles it, are on the Privacy page.
